When an anchor asked A Millionaire who was once Poor
What was The meal you loved as a kid?
He Replied having Tears In His Eyes :
I loved Meals My Mom Made for me as a kid but now that I am an adult I Realize My parents only made because We were poor
I loved to still remind of things my mother did to keep some kind of food in our stomachs. Treet was always a treat - Mom sliced and fried it.
If I didn’t have cereal or oatmeal, Mom made cinnamon sugar bread for me - put slabs of butter on a piece of bread, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Broil in oven until the butter melts and the sugar caramelizes! Fit for a king!
My grandmother who lived in another state received government surplus foods and she’d often give some to us. I remember big rolls of bologna! We would slice it and put 3 slits and fry it up! Put a slice of surplus cheese on top (a big long block of cheese it was, too) and heaven!
My mother also made sandwiches for me made from Vienna sausages. Very cheap. I liked them until the day I heard a cousin comment that she couldn’t eat them after finding out what was in them (lots of parts of the bad meat). After I read the ingredients I couldn’t eat them any longer. Manufacturers now carefully word the ingredients so you can’t tell what kind of parts are in it.
Because we were so poor, Mom got very inventive with leftovers. Potatoes showed up the next day as potato pancakes, or - the wonderful stuffed hot dogs! She would slice the hot dogs, stuff leftover mashed potatoes in them, top with a line of ketchup and broil. Still, love them to this day!
